Japanese Edo Period Lion Mask

  • Description
    This a well-preserved lion mask that dates to the 18th century (possibly earlier). Lion masks were used in the traditional Gion Matsuri festival lion dances. The articulated mask with open jaw retains its original ears and tongue and removable Buddhist knob. The lion does not seem to have any restorations.
