Japanese Lacquerware Set of Boxes Tebako
-
Description
An antique set of Japanese tebako (hand box) with maki-e lacquer design circa 18th century Edo period. Tebako was known as hand box, which often consists of many individual sub-boxes, containers and compartment for the purpose of storing cosmetic materials. The most elaborate set was made as part of the trousseau for the bride of the aristocratic lineage. The tebako on offer here consists of a main box with a deep lid with bronze rings on both sides, an interior fitting tray and six mini containers each with its own decorated lids. The façade of the lid features the "Three Winter Friends"; Pine, Bamboo and Plum blossom, which are the symbols for nobility and longevity. A crane flies in the air and a turtle crawls on the ground, both auspicious animals in Japanese culture. Gold hiramakie, takamakie and kirigane as well as extensive silver fundame were used. The silver now shows a deep patina due to the age. The motifs continue on all side of the main box without letting the lid disrupt the design. Noting that there is significant difference in shade of the part covered by the lid due to less exposure to the light, hence the oxidation, evident of the great age of the piece. The six mini containers features a conformed shape with the main box and each features an elaborate make-e design on top, which likely suggest the cosmetic or fragrant contend of the individual box. The tray has a small hole which was used as a convenience point for the bride to retrieve the small boxes.
A rare tebako set in original form, patina and condition. The workmanship of the lacquer was meticulous and superb. Wonderful example. -
