Casey McCafferty

American
Casey McCafferty is an American sculptor and furniture artisan at the forefront of the contemporary Studio Craft revival, celebrated for works that seamlessly melt the boundaries between fine art objects and functional furniture. Known for his raw, primitive aesthetic and mastery of direct carving, McCafferty manipulates natural mediums to expose their innate, tactile poetry. His highly sought-after functional sculptures are frequently exhibited in elite design spaces, including JK Art & Design Projects in Southampton, New York.

McCafferty's trajectory into the high-end collectible design landscape is distinctively non-linear. Born on Staten Island into a family of stone masons, he spent his youth mastering hands-on construction, rough carpentry, and masonry alongside his father. Rather than entering art school, he chose a corporate track, earning a business degree and spending four years working as a corporate banker in New York City. His artistic impulses eventually eclipsed the financial sector; McCafferty spent his nights moonlighting in a Brooklyn woodshop before abandoning banking entirely to pursue custom fabrication full-time. He spent several formative years in Los Angeles executing ambitious architectural installations before returning to the Northeast to establish his current creative studio in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.

Steering clear of digital modeling, uniform industrial fabrication, and preparatory blueprints, McCafferty works through a deeply intuitive method of direct carving. He approaches massive, raw timbers of walnut, elm, ebonized ash, and blocks of stone without predetermined templates, letting the organic topography of the medium dictate his movements. Utilizing a combination of chainsaws, chisels, and hand grinders, McCafferty meticulously coaxes out forms while honoring natural imperfections like knots, irregular grains, and splits. This hyper-personal, physically demanding process ensures that every monolithic table, biomorphic chair, cabinet, and architectural totem is entirely one of a kind.

McCafferty’s design vernacular draws profound inspiration from human anatomy, natural geological formations, mythology, and ancient folklore. The resulting pieces possess a powerful, totemic presence—appearing simultaneously like excavated archaeological artifacts and futuristic relics. This striking ability to inject raw, old-world craftsmanship into highly sophisticated modern spaces has resonated globally. His work is regularly acquired by international collectors, showcased at major art fairs, and heavily championed by leading interior design forces such as Kelly Wearstler and Pierre Yovanovitch.
