Antique Lacquered Wood Offering Vessel Thailand

Description
A turned wood offering vessel with red lacquer and scrolling filigree decoration and assortment of small glass mosaic inlays. The piece is from Thailand Bangkok Period circa 1890-1920s. This type of covered vessel is called a “Hsun Ok” and was made in the form of the stupa of the Buddhist temple. Originally used for gathering the offerings to the monasteries, the monks still use the simpler form to collect elm to this day. In the early 20th century, many vessels were made into a more luxury item with elaborate surface ornamentations such as this piece, with gold painting, filigree relief, glass mosaic and even gem stones.
