Description
'Eve', Biblical marble figure by Claude Michaud
French, 19th Century
Height 99cm, width 36cm, depth 30cm
This fantastic sculpture depicts the famous story of the Original Sin, Eve's acquiescence to temptation by eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Full of pathos and emotional energy, the sculpted white marble figure shows Eve looking down towards the ground as her hand stretches out to her right. Her hand is shown touching the apple, being held out by a serpent on a tree stump, partly wrapped around Eve's wrist. The figure is set on a circular plinth base, marked 'Eve' to the front and 'Claude Michaud' to the back. Claude Michaud was a French sculptor born in 1822.
