Description
Pair of George III pedestals possibly by Thomas Chippendale the Younger
Fine pair of George III Neoclassical pedestals having gadrooned tops over classical medallion busts, the turned collars having carved long leaf caps, fluted shafts, foliage carved bases with molded scrolled feet, circa 1780-90.
Note: there are several similarities to other known works by or attributed to Chippendale the Younger including the treatment of the long leaf carved collars, the carving to rings and fluted panels and the profile and shape foot. See The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale Junior, Jr. Judith Goodison, illustrations 202-204, and also illustration 161 (polescreen - Burton Constable) showing carved collar with identical carving, illustration 74 (Bed - Petworth) carving on bedpost and illustration 81 and 82(Bed- Paxton House), carving on bedpost.
For a similar pair of pedestals, see Sotheby's Nov 17th, 1989, collection of the late Lord Samuel of Wych Cross. -
