Regency Period Black Painted and Gilt Decorated X-Frame Stool
-
Description
Stools of this design were produced in England as early as the 1760s but it was not until the publication of design books by Thomas Hope, George Smith and their colleagues promoting the ancient Greek and Egyptian aesthetic in the first decade of the 19th century that they became hugely popular. Many variations of the design exist and Gillows was one of the principal manufacturers. Although probably not by Gillows this is an attractive example in beech wood and has recently been upholstered in a classic Wiener Werkstatte designed fabric probably by Josef Hoffmann.
An eye-catching stool.
