White Porcelain Blanc de Chine Rabbit by Eva Vastagh for Herend
-
Description
White porcelain rabbit by Eva Vastagh (1900-1942) for Herend of Hungary.
Born in 1900 Vastagh was one of a small number of trained professional sculptors to be regularly commissioned by the exclusive Herend Porcelain manufacturer in Budapest. Specialising in animals this is the largest of the rabbits she was commissioned to produce at nearly a foot in height.
Herend's reputation for exceptional porcelain is manifest in this elegant Blanc de Chine example, the rabbit is very naturalistic in its modelling and appears in a state of alert, its head turned slightly as if preparing to flee.
Other than the Herend commissions Vastagh was an accomplished sculptress producing many life size memorials and statues throughout a career tragically cut short by her death in 1942. -
