Guillerme et Chambron Coffee Table with Ceramic Inlays, France 1960s

$ 3,325
  • Description
    This brilliant coffee table with faïence designed by world-renowned ceramist Boleslav Danikovski, is a piece that is characterized by design genius of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron. It visually represents the very reason Votre Maison, the French duo’s company significantly influenced French design history.

    The legendary French design duo, Guillerme and Chambron, placed equal emphasis on function and aesthetics, creating an aesthetic as staid as it was - and continues to be - arresting. While their work is in many ways distinctively conservative and recognizable from project to project, both in form and in medium — their wood of choice, waxed oak, was often either lightened or darkened to the same few tones — the duo’s pieces also possessed an unusual flare. They incorporated elaborately detailed tiles and unusually bright fabrics, both of which could be used interchangeably in a variety of pieces. This coffee table is one of the most stunning examples of the success of their design experiments. It is hard to choose between the tabletop with ceramic inlays, and the sculptural legs as the most distinctive feature of this model. The thin glazed ceramic tiles, or faïences, are quite artistic, with interesting nonfigurative patterns in various hues of blue. The vivid colours stand out greatly against the light oak body that has aged beautifully and displays a beautiful grain within the wood.

    The collaboration of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron was destined to be as influential as prolific. Not only did their company, Votre Maison, produce over two thousand models during the second half of the twentieth century, it also left an indelible stamp on the design of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The company’s output served as a model for a vast field of liveable contemporaneous design and designers.
