Description
A Korean ceramic shallow bowl on ring foot in the classic Buncheong (or Punch'ong) style from early Joseon Dynasty circa 15th century. The bowl features a tight white slip decoration using stamping technique. With a chrysanthemum mandala in center, two concentric bands with radiating patterns demarcated by circular lines occupy the entire surface. The exterior was decorated with a band of flowerhead sandwiched in two grounds of circular lines. The decoration was done profusely as the typical early Buncheong ware but it was also effectively and orderly, with a strength in character. There is an area of old Kintsugi repair on the rim. Judging by the quality and patina, it was historical and likely performed at some point of the bowl's life in Japan. There is also a red number on the base from the collection.
Provenance: From a French collection with a note copy indicating it was purchased in 1963 Vente Sotheby's du 23-24 mai 1963, n°238. This has not been verified as we couldn't find that old catalog.
For a similar bowl see soo 334 in the collection of National Museum of Korea. Illustrated on page 119 of "Earth Fire Soul: The Masterpieces of Korean Ceramics". -
