Provenzano was a student of Hans Hoffmann (1880-1966), a key player in the Abstract Expressionism movement. Hoffmann was a significant influence on post-war American avant-garde artists. His other students include Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Rivers, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Nevelson.
