Scandinavian Mid-Century Pair of Easy Chairs, Scandinavia ca 1950s

$ 7,315
  • Description
    This pair of easy chairs is exemplary of the main ideals of mid-century modernism: the chairs are characterized by clean, simple lines, honest use of materials, and a lack of unnecessary decorative embellishments. Instead, the focus is on craftsmanship and the clever use of materials.

    With a clear preoccupation with geometry, this pair’s outstanding architectural frames recalls the mastery of European designers, particularly that of Swedish and Danish architect/designers. The clear lines of the frames contrasts beautifully with the lush texture of the wool blend upholstery and creates an elegant and light appearance. As the backs and seats are visually blended together by the light upholstery, the chairs have a beautiful flow and the obtuse angles are accentuated as well. The solid wooden legs have a classically tapered shape and visually arresting pattern that makes each chair unique. While the refined linearity defines the overall aesthetic, functionality was clearly an important aspect of the design. Due to the well-chosen proportions and upholstered bodies, this pair of easy chairs offers great comfort. The lines are crisp and elegant, with the ergonomic seats and backrests aiding stability and comfort.

    Scandinavian mid-century design has influenced European furniture to a great degree, resulting in iconic pieces defined by minimalism, simplicity, and functionality. The muted colours and gentle designs make mid-century furniture - like this pair - an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces. Additionally, master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities.
