Bamboo, rattan, lacquer; hexagonal plaiting, bending, wrapping, knotting; copper alloy liner
Comes with a wood storage box inscribed outside "Chinese flower basket"
This classic Chinese basket form would later be adapted by Tanabe Chikuunsai I (1877–1937) and his pupils for some of their most impressive formal presentation baskets; for examples see A+C VWG, Baskets: Masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art, 1850–2015, n.p. [Catalogue of the Naej Collection], cat. nos. 99, 100 (Tanabe Chikuunsai I), 114 (Tanabe Chikuunsai II). -
