Mahogany, sycamore, and silk marquetry inlay centre table

$ 9,500
  • Description
    Mahogany, sycamore, and silk marquetry inlay centre table
    English and French, 19th century
    84cm wide x 63cm deep x 72.5cm high

    This nineteenth century centre table, made in a simple yet effective rectangular form, features a combination of English and French craftsmanship, the former for the mahogany structure, the latter for the silk marquetry panel which is inlaid into the upper surface. In the centre of the silk, in encompassing bands of Classical and floral geometric patterns, is the monogram PDP, in all likelihood the name of the individual for which this piece was made.

    Similar bands of patterns, in an increasingly intricate array, create a series of borders around the central space, within which are the French words 'AMITIE' and 'FERMETE' for friendship and steadfastness. In the corners are four small pictures of urns, each of which is a different Classical shape, and the colour palette used consists of a subtle and muted selection of green, blues, orange, and off-white shades that complement the rich colour of the wooden structure, which consists of a mount for the top and four square tapering legs. Full of skill and clarity in its construction, this piece will make a fine addition to any interior.
