Description
Mid-century modern furniture have been mainly designed for the urban home in mind. With sleek outlines, sculptural details and strong design sensibility with timeless flair, furniture from the era embody the best of this alluring style.
These chairs have a very interesting historic design, with some parts resembling gothic wooden chairs. These historic design elements include the fluted spires on the top, the shape of the legs and the mushroom caps on the arms. Similar types of chairs are often referred to as “castle chairs” as the overall design recalls the furniture that could be once found in castles. The carved back, seat and legs all show the beautiful predecessors’ charm that often inspired mid-century European designers and craftsmen. The perfect material for the smooth, sculpted parts is solid wood, especially oak. The slats on the backs end in a sculpted part that is mirrored in the wide sides of the chairs. To assure comfort, the chairs’ backs are in a permanently reclined position, which is a characteristically mid-century modern element. As even the joinery screws are covered with wooden caps, the material dominates the design complemented by the white bouclé upholstery. The looped yarn contrasts well with the smooth surface of the wood, creating visual interest where both materials highlight the other.
Historicizing furniture details were quite common during the mid-century, borrowing inspiration from previous eras. This pair of castle chairs are beautifully and expertly sculpted with a great balance between the historic and modern elements.
