French Art Deco Sideboard in Bookmatched Walnut, Black Lacquer & Gilded Bronze

This French Art Deco sideboard was realized in France circa 1940. It features a volumetric rectangular body in bookmatched walnut and lacquer with truly world class marquetry throughout. Sitting on four stylized saber feet with gilded bronze sabots, the sideboard features a front consisting of bookmatched walnut creating concentric diamond forms that emanate outwards from the center of the piece bookended on each side by keyholes. Elaborate and masterful marquetry occupies the area between these keyholes- including hybridized geometric forms (rhombus forms that seamlessly morph into ovular ones) bookended on top and bottom by streamlined and scroll forms. A meandering curvilinear border in walnut marquetry defines boundaries of the central panels consisting of diamond form bookmatching.

Beyond this border the walnut grain runs perpendicular to the interior grain. Additionally, the facade of the sideboard is traced in black lacquer, and there is a curvilinear gilded bronze embellishment at the base of the body (reiterating this formal leitmotif that recurs throughout the design of the piece). The doors of the piece open to reveal drawers as well as open compartments on the interior, offering a wealth of storage options. With its first incredible marquetry and uncompromising attention to detail this piece embodies a level of craftsmanship that is nearly impossible to find in the present era. Its clean modernist lines and refined palate make this piece as versatile as it is aesthetically compelling, blending perfectly with any style of interior from classic Deco to contemporary. It has been newly restored to mint condition.
