Description
A large Sèvres style, mounted and gilt, painted porcelain vase
French, Early 20th Century
Height 132cm, diameter 37cm
This exquisite piece is a beautiful Sèvres style porcelain vase, with painted cartouches on each face, mounted, and adorned with various gilt decoration. It was made in France, sometime around the early 20th century, and features on either face beautiful painted scenes. One, is that of a candlelit intimate interior, the other is of a beautiful, open, quiet, autumnal rural view; the contrast between the warm figurative interior scene and that of a beautiful large open landscape creates a delightful effect.
This effect is enriched by the sumptuous gilding and blue ribbon patterns, that have at once both the appearance of elegant floral motifs, and intricate celtic-style knots. The gilding also consists of various ormolu mounts, both on the base, some in the form of rosettes, and on the body, with both foliate elements and the finial on top. One painting is signed 'Dumas,' the mount stamped 'AM,' and various marks are visible as photographed. In summary it is a beautiful, impressive, and memorable, artistic and decorative piece.
