Description
Pair of large Canton style famille rose porcelain vases
Chinese, Late 19th Century
Height 64cm, diameter 25cm
Crafted in Qing dynasty China in the late nineteenth century for the export market, these fine porcelain vases, complete with covers, were made in the familiar Canton style in the famille rose class of works. Decorated profusely and densely with scenes of courtly life in three pair of segments, one on the main body, one round the neck, and one towards the base, the images are interspersed with flowers, fruit and insect life. The dominant colour used in the enamel glaze is pink, hence the classification. These works enjoyed huge popularity in the nineteenth, containing a snapshot of Chinese life designed for the sake of a Western audience, and make an equally collectible and enjoyable set of works today. -
