Axel O. Röck Oak Sideboard for Otterup Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1961

  • Description
This stunning oak sideboard by Danish designer, Axel O. Röck is enriched with carved details and has a grandiose appearance. The design contains traces of the Baroque style paired with mid-century modern elements.

Axel O. Röck is a lesser known persona of Danish design, very few of his creations remain today. It could be because of this and his preference for the baroque touch executed in solid blonde oak that his designs, especially this stunning sideboard is often misattributed to Henning Kjærnulf. Oak is a durable, long-lasting material that is the perfect blank canvas for the intricate carved shapes and details of the design to take form. The functional and decorative elements of the design are treated equally, resulting in a stunning, balanced look. The design features versatile decorative details and storage solutions. Starting from the hand carved inlays on the front doors with organic patterns to the scalloped lower side and carved legs, the design shows that this sideboard was meant to be placed next to a wall. Accordingly, the backside is much more understated, showing the functional mindset of Röck. This mindset also shows through the sliding doors, the stretchers connecting the legs, and the versatile storage spaces. Behind the doors are shelves and drawers arranged in such a way that objects of diverse shapes and sizes can be easily stored.

These small functional elements also serve an aesthetic function besides the carved front and scalloped bottom. The mixture of round and straight shapes is used masterfully, giving depth to the blonde oak. This rare sideboard is sure to stand out as an accent piece, or complement its surroundings thanks to its natural colour and organic aesthetic.
