Alternating between each horizontal line are small impressed crosses and hatching / scratching patterns. Glazed in earthtone colors of a medium grayish brown background with white/cream overlay. Flattened rectangular bulbous form with signature cylindrical neck. Signed and titled on the underside. First time to market in over 48 years as we purchased the vessel from the original owner. Excellent condition with no chip, cracks or repairs.
As a member of the Cleveland School, Conover (1907-1994), worked for 30 years as a commercial designer before turning to ceramics full time in the 1960s. During his lifetime, his hand built stoneware pots were exhibited in many museums, galleries and arts centers around the USA, some traveling internationally. Since his death, appreciation for his work has steadily grown. Each vessel is unique and was given a Mayan name, from Aaltan to Zopotec, taken from a book of 800 Mayan words that he utilized for this purpose. -
