Ormolu, kingwood, bois satine and parquetry side table by Linke

Designed in the Louis XV style, this table is of shaped outline and includes an interestingly-patterned marble top with red, brown and orange tones on a white ground, set within a shaped ormolu mount that beautifully frames the marble. The table stands on precisely shaped cabriole legs which include well-executed gilt bronze mounted detailing to the front edges and feet.

The table sides - decorated with beautiful parquetry veneers in kingwood and bois satine, creating a wonderfully contrasting pattern - open magnificently on hinges to reveal the interior of the table. Once opened the piece is transformed to reveal mirrored glass panelled undersides, enclosing a conforming interior and reflecting the red velvet-lined luxury underside of the table top. Furniture that can be transformed, such as this table, are extremely rare and whilst its intended use is unknown, it is possible that the piece was used as a serving / tea table, occasional table, or possibly as a drinks cabinet.

The piece is signed in several places: the lock plates are signed 'CT LINKE SERRURERIE PARIS' and 'LF' is stamped to the reverse of the ormolu mounts.

This outstanding table is representative of the great craftsmanship demonstrated by Francois Linke throughout his career. Titled as one of the most important Parisian ébénistes of his time, Linke's work contributes to the revival of the Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture styles in the late 19th century. During the peak years of his career, Linke's name was synonymous with the best French furniture, and this table showcases the exquisite craftsmanship presented by Linke with which the public of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was infatuated.
