Description
Made to commemorate the death of Reverend J. Appleton of Brookfield, Massachusetts. Attributed to the school of Susanna Rowson, also known as Mrs. Rowson's Academy for Young Ladies, one of the finest schools for young American women in the early 1800s. Rowson was an acclaimed actress and novelist born to an English mother and American father. She was also the governess for the children of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire. In 1797, Rowson opened a needlework school in Boston. Her students produced a wide range of fine needlework pictures from 1797 until the school closed in 1822.
