Description
This sophisticated and important wall mounted sculpture was realized by the legendary 20th century American designer Paul Evans in 1973. This piece features the metal patchwork for which he is most renowned, and is an especially strong example of his practice. The piece offers four rectangular panels with abstract amorphic bronze, copper, brass and aluminum forms- each with a unique texture- hammered into the support. The various ores in their unadultered states as well as the exposed hardware represent signature aspects of his practice. From a distance this piece has the elegance in composition of a Jean Dunand screen, yet admired up close it has the rawness and verve of American brutalism at its best. With its refined color palate and strikingly graphic sensibility, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of Evans' work as well as those with a penchant for truly special objects.
Paul Evans (1931-1987) was an American furniture designer, sculptor, and artist, celebrated for his contributions to the American Craft Movement of the 1970s. Throughout the 1960s, Evans designed pieces that "drew inspiration from the sculpture work of Picasso, Harry Bertoia and Julio González" (NY Times, Bernstein, 2017). His clients include Tommy Hilfiger, Lenny Kravitz, Robert Loughlin, Cher, and many other celebrities, and design cognoscenti. The market for Paul Evans works remains as robust as ever with multiple pieces selling at auction within the last five years for upwards of a quarter million.
