Description
Among the many excellent European mid-century modern designs, some were well-known for their flair for the dramatic, which becomes evident upon looking at this set of four accent chairs. In many ways, it transcends the words “unique” or “one-of-a-kind” with a look that is just as clever as it is captivating.
The design of these chairs is playing with gravity, as their bodies are essentially a balancing act. Each one has a rather minimal design with round edges and effortlessly connecting parts. The sculptural frames consist of a round, open back that connects directly to the legs that have a square shape. The seats are balanced on these unique frames with gently raised profiles. The overall look is quite artistic, accentuated by the textured upholstery that gives the set a light, elegant appearance. Materials were critical to mid-century design, and were often used in tension with each other to create a unique look. This is exemplified by these chairs as they use a metal base to stabilize it, leaving it exposed in its rawness. The tension created by the duality of materials and impressions - soft and raw - is apparent and inherently modern. Thanks to these features, this set of accent or statement chairs is perfect to bring interest to any space regardless of style or colour scheme.
Interior architecture and interior design would be unimaginable today without elements of mid-century modern. As seen in these chairs, many hallmarks of the period are constantly reappearing: furniture classics as eye-catching statements, understated, geometric design for a touch of minimalism, and organic curves.
