Description
Two large English neoclassical carved wood mirrors
English, Late 19th Century
Height 229cm, width 155cm, depth 11cm
These exceptional, large Regency-style rectangular mirrors, sculpted from wood, radiate an exquisite blend of opulence and elegance. Originating from the late 19th century, they infuse the captivating charm of the neoclassical style with the refinement of English design.
Each mirror showcases an intriguing interplay of deep mahogany and lighter wood tones, creating a visually arresting contrast. The mirrors' upper borders are graced by hand-carved acanthus-leaf motifs, a classic hallmark of Regency style. The interplay of lighter acanthus leaf against the darker wood enhances depth and texture.
In the frames’ top panel, a pair of seated griffins, delicately chiselled from contrasting wood, frame a central cartouche, wherein stands an elegantly carved olive tree, a token of peace and victory. This central emblem acknowledges the ancient roots of the neoclassical style. The top panel's sides are also adorned with neat rosettes, arranged symmetrically.
Egyptian stiff-leaf columns flank the mirrors, their intricate detail acknowledging the Regency era's fascination with Egyptian motifs. The lower border displays a leaf wreath with a central sunflower motif, softening the design's architectural dominance and ensuring visual balance.
The pair of mirrors reflects the understated elegance inherent in Regency style, favouring proportion, symmetry, and classic architectural elements over the flamboyant opulence of other neoclassical styles like the French Empire style. The fine craftsmanship and detailed attention evident in these mirrors make them an ideal adornment to elegantly bring neoclassical charm to any home or interior space. -
