Description
Contemporary handcrafted clay vessel by Onka Allmayer-Beck
Austrian, 2023
Height 18.5cm, width 20.5cm, depth 13cm
This hand-glazed and hand-formed clay vessel is titled ‘Mini No. 269 (Rain)’ and was made by the Austrian artist, Onka Allmayer-Beck. An interesting slab-building technique was employed to create this charming ceramic piece.
The exciting form of the piece is eye-catching and expresses the artist’s style. The vessel is fired and glazed in blue and white, creating the illusion of rain falling from the sky, inspiring the piece’s title.
Allmayer-Beck does not decide the function of her creations but invited the users to use their imagination and decide what they would like to use it for. The piece is multifunctional and, for example, can be placed on a desk as a business card holder or on a dining table to display fruit.
The piece stands on four slender but durable legs, which are joined by a further clay ring. The underside of the vessel is stamped with the maker’s mark.
In 2016, Onka Allmayer-Beck transitioned from working for famous brands such as Giorgio Armani to being a ceramicist and creating vibrant and thought-provoking pieces. Her collections were displayed in numerous galleries and institutions such as the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.
This unusually shaped vessel is both functional and sculptural making outstanding addition to one’s collection.
