Description
Two cut glass and silver claret jugs, 19th Century
German, c.1890
Height 36cm, width 17cm, depth 13cm
These exquisite jugs have been expertly crafted in glass and are mounted with sterling silver necks, spouts, handles and lids.
The broadest part of the glass base, just above the bottom of each jug, is articulated by a decorative band, where the glass has been cut into multiple facets. The glass, above this point, is smooth and slightly scalloped.
Contrasting with this smooth transparent body, the top of each jug is mounted in silver. On each, the neck is decorated with Rococo style chased work, featuring scrolling acanthus leaf borders and panels framed with strapwork, containing fruit swags and flowing ribbons. Above, the spout is more simple in its design, while the lid is ornamented with dentil moulding, foliate patterns, and a fluted ball-shaped finial. The lid is inscribed with the name of the manufacturer, ‘H. Janssen & Cop’.
Each piece is fitted with a looping handle, which features punch work down its sides, and which is fitted, near its top, with a decorative silver clasp.
The interiors of the jugs are finished in silver-gilt, creating a beautiful contrast with the cool silver exterior; a stunning and luxurious addition which demonstrates the attention to detail of the silversmith and exemplifies the quality of the jugs. This finish also gives an impression of the richness and fine quality of the liquid stored within. -
