Description
Very large vermeil and lapis lazuli centrepiece by Asprey
English, c. 1980
Height 29cm, width 70cm, depth 27cm
Made by the renowned firm of Asprey in around 1980, this vermeil (silver gilt) and lapis lazuli centrepiece is of an impressive size and is sure to catch the attention of anyone who passes it.
The prominent central bowl is superbly carved from lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone said to be the symbol of wisdom. Its vibrant, ultramarine body is speckled with cream, white and navy patterns throughout, a naturally occurring feature on a stone of this type. The lip of the bowl is mounted with a silver gilt border.
Two large horses, each one standing on its hind legs are flanking the central bowl. The animals serve as decoration but also as handles. The exceptional quality of the piece is demonstrated by the magnificent detailing on the cast horses, such as the depiction of their muscles or hair.
The centrepiece stands on a stepped vermeil base to which the horses are attached. The ‘Asprey’ mark is positioned in the bottom centre of the lapis lazuli vase, acting as a mark of authenticity. The vermeil base is fully hallmarked.
The equestrian theme, the vibrant semi-precious stone as well as highest quality craftsmanship make this centrepiece bowl a very desirable addition to one’s collection.
