Description
Set of Antique Coalport Porcelain Dinner Plates Depicting English Fish
English, late 19th Century
Dimensions: Height 2cm, diameter 22cm
This charming set of nine dinner plates are of circular form, each decorated with a painted blue and gilt border and depicting a different common English fish in the centre. The fish are painted nauralistically underwater, swimming amongst various river weeds and plants. The different species of fish depicted are: a salmon, a mackerel, a golden carp, a common cod, a dace, a perch, a tench, a roach, and a carp and bream together on the same plate.
Coalport porcelain was at the centre of Shropshire pottery production in England, founded by John Rose in 1795. They specialised in dinner services like the present set, taking inspiration from the likes of Meissen and Sèvres porcelain manufactory.
Each plate is marked to the underside for Coalport porcelain, titled with the names of each fish depicted, numbered, and signed 'P. Simpson' on the front. -
