Description
Art Deco gilt bronze and onyx figure of a dancer by Lorenzl
Austrian, c. 1925
Height 31cm, width 17cm, depth 20cm
Josef Lorenzl (1892-1950), a renowned Austrian sculptor and ceramicist crafted this joyful figure of a dancer in around 1925.
The dancer is cast in ormolu (gilt bronze) and is portrayed in a very animated pose. Both of her hands are spread wide and her left leg is raised as if she is flying through the sky. She is only standing on one leg which is attached to the delicate round ormolu base featuring the maker’s mark, ‘LORENZL’. The female figure is dressed in typical Art Deco clothing, her hair flowing in the wind. Lorenzl depicted her with long, slender legs and eyes closed, all features which he is well-known for.
The figure stands atop a cylindrical green onyx plinth mounted on a flat semi-circular base made from the same material. The naturally occurring orange and cream colouring on the stone plays well with the shining gold of the ormolu.
The dreamlike pose, Art Deco features and well-known maker ensure this figure would be a magnificent addition to one’s collection.
