Gavin Benjamin stands as a versatile artist, seamlessly blending original analog photography and appropriated images with collage, paint, and varnish to craft opulent and intricate artworks. Rooted in baroque traditions, his creations weave in elements of contemporary culture, serving as provocative reflections that critique and explore societal nuances.

Originally hailing from Guyana, South America, and later raised in Brooklyn, New York, Benjamin's artistic journey began at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he earned his BFA. During this period, he interned with the renowned portrait photographer Arnold Newman, gaining invaluable insights into the art of capturing the human essence. Benjamin further honed his skills working as a black and white and color printer at esteemed labs like LTI and Baboo, before venturing into agencies such as Edge Reps and Exposure NY, representing commercial photographers and artists.

Drawing inspiration from the 15th to 17th-century Dutch and Italian masters, Benjamin's work exudes a romantic, mysterious, and brooding essence. His fascination with the deep, luxurious colors and intense light and dark shadows of this period is evident in his artistic approach. The juxtaposition of objects and compositions in his pieces serves to narrate compelling stories.

Gavin Benjamin delves into the complex intersection of culture, media, politics, fashion, and design, addressing the ongoing challenges faced by men of color in America. His artworks reflect a deep personal connection, encapsulating everything he loves and finds challenging. Honest, curious, bright, and thoughtful, his creations encapsulate the essence of why he embraced a career as a professional artist.

Benjamin's impactful work has graced prestigious exhibitions such as Slick Paris, Sotheby’s NY, Architectural Digest Home Design Show, Art Hampton, Affordable Art Fair, Scope Miami, Palm Beach Modern, Context Miami, Context NY, Art Silicon Valley, and the LA Art Fair. Each exhibition serves as a testament to his ability to captivate audiences and contribute thoughtfully to the contemporary art landscape.
