Description
Large Russian silver kovsch with cloisonné enamel decoration
Russian, 20th Century
Height 13cm, width 31cm, depth 16cm
This silver kovsch is decorated in high relief with the cloisonné enamelling technique. Repeated motifs adorn both the vessel’s body and handle, featuring symmetrical patterns that weave in shades of white, silver, blue, and red. Silver-gilt detailing and several delicate amber pieces add further elegance to this kovsch’s design, and the elaborate decoration makes this artefact an exemplar of pieces of this type.
The history of kovsch dates back to the 10th century AD, when they would have served as simple vessels or ladles. Over the centuries, they have developed to become desirable ceremonial presents, even gifted by tsars, and have become an important part of Russian culture and heritage.
On the reverse are stamped spurious marks.
Showcasing multiple elaborate craft techniques, this piece would make a superb addition to one’s collection. -
