Description
Large quartz crystal and vermeil bird model by Asprey
Swiss, c. 1975
Height 40cm, width 33cm, depth 40cm
This phenomenal piece of sculpture depicts an eagle in motion, taking off from a rocky crag made of stunning quartz crystal.
The body of the bird is carved from quartz with pyrite inclusions. The contrast between the transparent host quartz and golden pyrite inclusions is considered one of the most attractive pairings in the gem kingdom, making this a very desirable decorative object.
The blend of quartz and pyrite throughout the sculpture creates the impression of a ruffled exterior of a bird in flight, drawing attention to the distinctiveness of the bird’s stance. Pyrite, with its eye-catching shine, is thought to have special protective properties, perhaps reflecting the defensive posture of the eagle with its wings raised high. Balanced atop the crystals with remarkable delicacy are the head, wings, and talons of the bird, made from silver-gilt. The colour contrasts created between the purity of the gold, the clarity of the quartz crystal, and the texture of the pyrite give immense dynamism to the bird and show the remarkable skill of its creator in combining such different compounds into one stunning piece.
The piece is masterfully made by Asprey, the renowned British firm of jewellers and goldsmiths. The interior of each of the silver-gilt wings is marked ‘925’, as well as displaying the Swiss hallmark of Asprey.
The beautiful delicacy of this object undoubtedly reflects the unparalleled skill of Asprey’s makers, who continue to produce luxury items, like the piece in Mayfair Gallery’s collection, for an elite clientele.
