Pair of large malachite and ormolu mounted Empire style vases
French, 20th century

These splendid malachite and ormolu mounted vases are executed in the French Empire style and are emblazoned with gilt decoration that has an unmistakable air of confidence, pride, and victory. On either side they feature beautifully crafted swans with long arcing necks, four Napoleonic 'N's in small victory wreaths, a large victory laurel crown towards the base, and eagles on the necks, frontally and proudly depicted, gripping lightning bolts in their claws. With their large size, brilliant and vibrant green colour, and radiant gilt decoration, mounted upon square gilt bases they have a superb and magisterial scene of presence and assuredness, recalling as they do times of imperial confidence and pride.
