Description
11734 AN UNUSUAL MECHANICAL ARTS & CRAFTS PERIOD FRUITWOOD LIBRARY LADDER Possibly French. Third Quarter of the Nineteenth Century. Measurements: Open: Height overall: 75″ (190 cm); Width: 35 1/2 ” (90cm); Depth 22 3/4″ (58cm); Height to tallest step 40 1/4 inches.
Research:
Of fruit wood. The handrail is surmounted by a kidney-form handle atop a curved post from which issues a rounded handrail supported by three serpentine shaped flat bannisters. The six notched treads are connected to either side by arcaded side supports. The rear stanchion framed as a pair of beveled and notched legs united by two serpentine stretchers. A hinged, beveled bar spans the base. The whole with finely crafted steel fittings, which ingeniously facilitate the entire structure to fold flat.
