Description
Monumental Royal Vienna classical porcelain vase
Austria, 19th Century
Height 152cm, diameter 41cm
This magnificent vase was made by the renowned Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory in the 19th century. Loosely of baluster form and surmounted by a pinecone finial, this sensational ware is adorned with painted mythological scenes and ormolu decoration, also set against the rich red ground that has become a hallmark of Royal Vienna pieces.
Numerous painted friezes adorn the central body, neck, and foot of the vase. The two largest are on the obverse and reverse of the body and depict the story of Hero and Leander and the story of the Abduction of Europa respectively. The circular panels on each side of the vase depict female figures, with Hermione (the daughter of Menelaus) on one side and the goddess Flora on the other. Scenes on the neck and foot include a group of Maenads, and the image of Cupid tying Aglaia to a tree. All of these scenes are labelled with titles at the base of the image, either painted in gold (for the smaller examples) or engraved into the gilt border (for the larger). These panels are expertly painted and make the vase a celebration of the idealised beauty of the classical past.
All panels are set upon the red ground base, which is filled with gilt decoration. This decoration, like the friezes, is rooted in classicism, ensconcing floral, and acanthus leaf motifs within geometric ‘meandros’ bordering. Bird designs can also be seen hiding amongst the flowers and foliage.
A truly spectacular work that combines mythological history with European 19th century design, this monumental vase would make a superb addition to the appropriate interior.
Provenance: From the collection of the private museum of Sapporo Breweries Limited, Japan.
