Description
A bowl of large size for this series of works and of great impact and significance. Brown matte glazed surface, thin walled beautiful form.
During a period where Edwin Scheier searched for a decorative mode beyond glazing to embellish surface and explored abstracted figuration, this Pollock-inspired drawing mode was one of his most successful. Faces and figures can be found in the sgraffito decoration that runs in a band across the bowl. This highly intuitive/subconscious drawing style associated with the Surrealist movement has random aspects but also a clear structure that unites its visual elements.
Works from this group are in the collection of the Currier Gallery of Art, see “American Potters: Mary and Edward Scheier”, by Michael Komnecky, p. 63 and in the Newark Museum Collection, see “Great Pots: Contemporary Ceramics from Function to Fantasy”, by U.G. Dietz, p.111.
Signed “Scheier” on bottom, circa 1948
Provenance: Purchased from Joan Brownstein at The Winter Show, NYC, 1/12/12 -
