John Rutherford Boyd

American, 1884 - 1951
John Rutherford Boyd, known simply as Rutherford Boyd, was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He moved to New York City and attended the Art Students League. He is documented as having been active in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1909. Boyd worked as an illustrator before turning to the fine arts and becoming a painter, sculptor, and art teacher. He also wrote numerous articles about art that were published in various periodicals. Boyd exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1926 to 1929, and 1931 to 1932. He won prizes at the Dallas Art Association in 1940 and the Southern States Art League in 1941. Boyd was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club, and the Architectural League of New York. Late in life he settled in Leonia, New Jersey.
