Description
Pair of Chinese Export porcelain ecuelles, or broth bowls, each with molded basketweave decoration and painted overall with flower sprays, the bodies with stylized boar's head handles, the covers with scalloped edges. Made for the Continental trade. Stands lost.
Ecuelles were popular in France and Germany in the 18th century. Intended for hot broth to be consumed in the bedroom, the covers kept the contents warm during the journey from the kitchen. The undertrays or stands, which are missing from these, held bread. -
