Pair of antique six-light silvered bronze candelabra by Christofle

$ 56,250
  • Description
    Pair of antique six-light silvered bronze candelabra by Christofle
    French, 19th Century
    Height 67cm, diameter 37cm

    This superb pair of silvered bronze candelabra are crafted in the Rococo style. The circular bases stand on four openwork grapevine feet, and feature applied wheat sheaves and cartouches engraved with the initials ‘PGZ’ – likely the individual for whom the objects were made.

    The main stem is carved in the form of a tree trunk, and extends into six branching arms wrapped with arms. Each of the branches is foliate capped and is surmounted by a bell-shaped capital with geometric engraving. Each candelabra is topped with a flower-cluster finial, just beneath which tiers of petals can be seen protruding from the stem.

    The main decorative appeal of the candelabra lies in the sculptural putti which adorn the shaft. One putti reaches for the grapes that hang above his head, whilst the other holds a bird and nest. Both cherubs are beautifully sculpted, even on a miniature scale.

    The candelabra are stamped on the base ‘CHRISTOFLE’ and with the manufactory seal and inventory number. Established by Charles Christofle in 1830, the Christofle manufactory is notable for introducing the techniques of silver-plating and electrolytic gilding to silverware production. The company continue to craft stunning functional and decorative pieces for an elite clientele.

    Replete with superb decorative elements, this pair would make a fine addition to any collection of antique silverware.
