Description
Eastern European weaving has gain a world-wide recognition for bravely combining dark tones with stylized floral motifs which results in utterly elegant designs with a great dose of character and a pinch of feminine delicacy. The area rug before your eyes shows us a variation on traditional Bessarabian aesthetics with strong oriental influences. The vast main field of the oversized rug is covered in an allover grid with motifs of crosses, complemented by two types of medallions. The octagonal medallion is a reference to the famous ‘gul’, the elephant footprint, which in Turkish rugs symbolizes auspiciousness. In turn, the other one clearly represents a simplified flower head. Everything is enclosed within a border kept in the spirit of the main design. The color palette comprises of light gray with bluish undertones as well as dark red, dusty orange and slate gray details. In addition to excellent appearance, the Bessarabian rug can also boast of impeccable workmanship. It is a flat-weave which means there is no pile. The body was thoroughly hand-woven of the finest wool in accordance with centuries-old techniques. If properly maintained, the rug will withstand years of usage, even in high-traffic areas, without any signs of wear. Doris Leslie Blau carries an exceptional collection of original modern rugs in many styles and materials. Contemporary hand-made rugs are a bridge throughout history, they are the fruit of the constant evolution of the weaving craft that has accompanied men since the dawn of civilization.
