Description
The three-seater wooden and fabric sofa, model Cornaro, was designed by Carlo Scarpa for Simon Gavina in 1973.
This sofa boasts a spacious and comfortable seat comprised of a series of padded cushions set within a varnished wooden frame. Its design, by Scarpa, epitomizes the period of aesthetic exploration that captivated the Venetian designer in the early 1970s. Like his architectural endeavors, Scarpa's approach to furniture design is deeply rooted in the graphic process of drawing. It's noteworthy that Scarpa diverges from his contemporaries by utilizing drawing not just as a tool, but as a means of conceptualization, guiding the final form of his creations.
The Cornaro sofa exudes architectural influences, evident in the voluminous cushions and subtle striations, reminiscent of Scarpa's trademark reinforced concrete blocks often found in his architectural projects. However, these architectural references are tempered by delicate laces, elegantly tying the padded components to the wooden frame.
Beyond its aesthetic allure, this sofa embodies a blend of irony and functionality, perfectly suited to contemporary living. Its significance lies not only in its design, but also in its manufacturing heritage. Produced by Gavina in 1973, this piece contributes to the rich tapestry of iconic designs that emerged in the latter half of the 20th century.
Presented in excellent condition, a pair of these sofas are available, meticulously restored while retaining the authenticity of the original fabric.
