Description
Beautifully and subtly glazed in tones of grey, green, pink and tan, this stunning Art Deco sculptural rondel depicts Bellerophon, a nude male figure from Greek mythology, restraining a winged Pegasus in a lush springtime landscape. This piece is a rare example of the work of Mario Brunetti, who was part of a circle of sculptors and ceramicists influenced by the enormously successful Lenci workshop in Turin (Torino). Brunetti favoured mythological subjects, but his work is extremely rare. This motif of Bellerophon, shown nude with Greek cap, restraining the rearing Pegasus, is closely patterned after a painting made by Walter Crane, the famed English illustrator, in 1889.
