American, lived/active; New York, New Mexico, Massachusetts.

Carved and painted teakwood.
Provenance: Private Collection. Sotheby’s, New York, American Paintings, March 23, 2005, Lot 156.
Warren Wheelock is best known as an abstract sculptor. During the 1920’s he primarily focused on both abstract and figural works. Wheelock regularly exhibited in New York and was a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists. This abstract female figure was chiseled with a hickory mallet from a single block of teak wood.
