George Washington Nicholson

George Washington Nicholson (1832–1912) was an American painter born in Salem County, New Jersey. Despite spending much of his life in relative obscurity, recent interest in his work has brought renewed attention to his contributions to American art. Known for his historical scenes, landscapes, and occasional still lifes, Nicholson often gave away his paintings, making many untraceable, though he was diligent in signing and dating most of them.
Nicholson studied in France under the influential artist Isabey, who helped shape his landscape techniques. His works were regularly showcased at the Haseltine Art Galleries, as well as at prominent institutions such as the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Though he lived a modest life, Nicholson garnered a dedicated following, including art dealer Deschonde, who frequently visited him to acquire pieces for his museum in Chester, Pennsylvania. Today, Nicholson's artistry is increasingly recognized as a significant part of the American art narrative.
