A Fine Pair of Federal Side Chairs
New York, ca. 1800.
Mahogany, pine and ash secondary woods.
Both chairs are equally in fine condition, full height, minor customary wear.
Provenance: Private Collection, North Carolina; Israel Sack, Inc., New York 1999; Estate of Harry Weeks, Framingham, Massachusetts.
Illustrated in Wallace Nutting’s “Furniture Treasury,” plate #2389.
The crests have three undulating arches above carved splats with rosettes over drapery swages flanked by vertical columns with acanthus carved capitals.
The upholstered seats are supported by squared, reeded tapered legs ending on spade feet.
