Description
Georgian Sampler, 1803, Jane Muncy Aged 9. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering floral border. Colours gold, blue, green, copper, silver, black, copper and pink. Verse entitled, 'THE TRULY GOOD AND GREAT' reads, 'Theyre only Great, whom no base Motive rules, Who owe no Glory to the Breath of Fools, Friends to true Merit to their Country dear, To others kind, but to themselves fever of, Quiet in suffering, with their Lot content; And careful to improve the Talents lent, Good without Pride, the humble, yet not mean, In Danger fearless and in Death serene.'. Other verses in the middle read, '1. Why should I love my sport so well, So constant at my play, And lose the thoughts of Heaven and Hell, And then forget to pray. 2. What do I read my Bible for, But Lord to learn thy will. And shall I daily know thee more, And less obey the still. 3. How senseless is my heart and wild, How vain are all my thoughts. Pity the weakness of a child. And pardon all my faults. 4. Make me thy heavenly voice to hear, And let me love to pray, Since God will lend a gracious ear. To what a Child can say.'. Signed and dated, 'JANE MUNCY FINISHED THIS WORK JANUARY THE 31 IN THE NINTH YEAR OF HER AGE ANNO DOMINI 1803'. A good set of motifs, including a swan, trees, potted flowering plants, a fir tree, bees and flowering trees. Framed in an old maple frame with rippled, old glass.
