Description
Elegant six-drawer cabinet in teak veneer Model Ry 16, design by Hans J. Wegner, produced by Ry Møbler, Denmark, 1950s
The purity of lines and the perfect balance of proportions immediately reveal Hans J. Wegner’s design sensibility. Born in 1914 to a family of shoemakers, Wegner became a cabinetmaker almost by chance, yet his name remains inseparably linked to the “Swedish modern” style, which profoundly influenced 20th-century furniture design. Renowned for his collection of sofas and chairs, he masterfully infused his creations with a sense of understated domestic elegance.
This refined chest of drawers exemplifies these principles, featuring a compact structure and an irregular sequence of seven drawers, designed for practical and organized storage. Originally conceived as an accessory piece for a space dedicated to art and technical drawing, it is particularly suited for storing small objects and precision tools.
One might imagine that Wegner himself had a similar piece in his private design studio, alongside his drafting table. Today, in a contemporary interior, this cabinet lends itself to various uses—serving as an elegant storage piece in a bedroom or a functional element in a reading or creative space.
