Navajo (Dine') sandcast bracelet

$ 425
  • Description
    2 1/4" diameter x 1 5/16" from the inside center to the opening in the back. The opening is 1 1/4" side.

    It is very hard to date a sandcast bracelet, especiallly one that does not have stones. The Navajo (Dine') began making these bracelets in the late 19th century and they continue to do so today. This bracelet clearly has a lot of age and it has survived the years well.

    Sandcasting is a difficult process. The artist makes a mold with a hole on one end and then pours motlen silver into the mold. He then files down the protruding sharp ends so that the design element(s) are all the remains. Patina gathers on the surfaces that are handled or those that are against the skin.
