Description
A beautiful set of ten “Lucciola” in ebonised cherrywood with gold leaf detail, produced by Sanguineti Colombo, Chiavari, early 1960s
There are chairs that stand out not just for their form, but for their rarity. Produced in limited numbers, these pieces are not only hard to come by—they also represent some of the finest expressions of creativity from the historic Chiavari workshops. This particular model, dating from the early 1960s, is featured in the original Sanguineti Colombo catalogues of the time.
The very name of the manufacturer evokes a deep sense of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail—yet this example still exceeds expectations. The chair, named Lucciola (Italian for “firefly”), conjures nostalgic images of warm summer nights, meadows, and fleeting glimmers of light in the dark.
Its ebonised black frame is subtly illuminated by a small touch of pure gold leaf applied to the backrest slat—a delicate artisan detail that lends this piece an uncommon elegance. The structure is made of wild cherrywood, carefully seasoned over time and shaped using the traditional steam-bending technique. These methods give the chair its defining qualities: exceptional lightness combined with impressive strength—hallmarks of the renowned Chiavari chairs.
A closer look reveals a succession of curves and subtle detailing that clearly reflect artisanal craftsmanship. From the legs to the backrest, the design flows with a graceful rhythm, echoing the movement of a firefly tracing luminous paths through an August garden.
Fully restored, refinished, and re-caned in our in-house atelier, these chairs are in excellent condition and ready to enhance the dining or living area of a refined interior.
